TxDOT is testing AI use in a pilot program to detect incidents on the road, with machine learning derived from video analytics of traffic cameras. In the program, AI identifies traffic disruptions including debris on the roads, pedestrians crossing highways, and car crash incidents. The tool helps TxDOT more quickly deploy emergency crews responding to accidents, among other functions. AI has also been used to significantly reduce TxDOT’s invoice generating time “from weeks to seconds,” and the organization said it may be useful in future functions as a chatbot, for fleet assessment, and for running analyses of high-risk crash zones in the future.
